To change your Window fonts:

Open Display in Control Panel.

On the Appearance tab, in Font size, click a new font size.

Click Apply

To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

This option enables you to enlarge the fonts used in window headers, icon labels, and menus.

The font size options are based on the current theme, visual style, and color scheme. For some themes, styles, or schemes, you may only have one font size option.

To change the look of Window elements:

1.Open Display in Control Panel.

2.On the Appearance tab, click Advanced.

3.In the Item list, click the element you want to change, such as Window, Menu, or Scrollbar, and then adjust the appropriate settings, such as color, font, or font size.

4.Click OK or Apply to save your changes.

To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

Your changes are saved until you make further changes or choose a different theme.

Changing the look of individual items is only useful if you select Windows Classic in the Windows and buttons list on the Appearance tab. If you select a different option, the theme determines the appearance of your menus, fonts, icons, and other Window elements.

The Font area will be unavailable for elements in the Item list that do not display text.

To select a different theme:

1.Open Display in Control Panel.

2.On the Themes tab, under Theme, click a new theme.

To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

Themes affect the overall look of your desktop, including the background, screen saver, icons, windows, mouse pointers, and sounds.

If more than one person uses a computer, each with his or her own user account, each person can choose a different theme.

To customize a background color:

1.Open Display in Control Panel.

2.On the Desktop tab, click Color to display the available colors.

3.Click Other.

4.In the Color dialog box, click anywhere in the color matrix on the right.

5.Drag the pointer in the color matrix to the right or left to change hue. Drag the pointer up or down to change color saturation. Drag the slider at the right of the matrix to change the luminosity.

6.Once you have defined the color you want, click Add to Custom Colors and then click OK.

*To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

*To create multiple custom colors, click a color under Basic colors before you define your custom color. Once you have defined the new color, click Add to Custom Colors to add the new color.

To change your desktop background:

1.Open Display in Control Panel.

2.On the Desktop tab, do one or more of the following:

*Click a picture in the Background list. In Position, click Center, Tile, or Stretch.

*Click Browse to search for a background picture in other folders or on other drives. You can use files with the following extensions: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .dib, .png, .htm. In Position, click Center, Tile, or Stretch.

*Select a color from Desktop color. The color fills the space not used by a picture.

*To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

*You can use a personal picture as a background. All of your personal pictures located in My Pictures are listed by name in the Background list.

*You can save a picture from a Web site as a background. Right-click the picture and then click Set as Background. The picture is listed in the Background box as Internet Explorer Background.

*If you choose an .htm document as your background picture, the Position options are unavailable. The .htm document is automatically stretched to fill your background.

To change Windows visual effects:

You can turn specific Windows visual effects on or off. For example, you can display shadows under menus to give a three-dimensional (3-D) effect, indicate folder types with watermarks, and increase the size of icons.

You can change some visual effects in Display Properties and others in System Properties in Control Panel.

Change visual effects in Display:

1.Open Display in Control Panel.

2.On the Appearance tab, click Effects.

3.In the Effects dialog box, select the check box for those items you want to turn on.

*To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

*For information about a specific item, right-click the item and then click What's This?.

Change visual effects in System:

1.Open System in Control Panel.

2.On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.

3.On the Visual Effects tab, click Custom.

4.Select the check box for those items you want to turn on. Clear the check box for the items you want to turn off.

*To open System, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

To change the number of colors displayed on a monitor:

1.Open Display in Control Panel.

2.On the Settings tab, in the Color quality list, click a different color setting.

*To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

*Choose Medium to display over 65,000 colors, High to display over 16 million colors, and Highest to display over 4 billion colors. Choosing more colors provides better color quality on your screen.

*Settings that display a larger number of colors normally require more computer memory and might affect performance on older computers.

*You can switch your color quality temporarily to 256 colors if you have games or other programs that perform better or must run at that level. To switch to 256 colors, right-click the game or program (on the desktop or on the Start menu), and then click Properties. Click the Compatibility tab, and then select the Run in 256 colors check box. Your display reverts to its default color quality when you close the program.

*Your monitor and video adapter determine the color settings that are available for your screen.

*Changes to the color settings affect all users that log on to the computer.

*Only the recommended color settings are listed. For additional settings, click the Advanced button on the Settings tab, click the Adapter tab, and then click List all Modes. Select the resolution, color level, and refresh rate you want.

*If you are using multiple monitors, you can specify the color settings for each installed monitor. If you click the icon for a secondary monitor, the Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor check box must be selected to change the settings for that monitor.

Changing visual effects:

Windows provides several options to set the visual effects of your computer. For example, you can choose to show shadows under menus, giving them a 3-D look. You can tell Windows to display the entire contents of a window while you move it on your screen. To make large text more readable, you can choose to display the smooth edges of screen fonts. You can also enable the Web view in your folders, which will display a list of hyperlinked tasks and information on the left side of the folder window. Windows provides options for enabling all of the settings (for best appearance), or none of the settings (for best computer performance). You can also restore the original default settings.

To use ClearType for screen fonts:

1.Open Display in Control Panel.

2.On the Appearance tab, click Effects.

3.In the Effects dialog box, select the Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts check box.

4.Click ClearType in the list.

*To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

*ClearType is ideal for portable computer and other flat screen monitors. ClearType may appear slightly blurry on desktop computer monitors.

*Whether you select Standard or ClearType from the list, you must have a video card and monitor that support a color setting of at least 256 colors. Best results are achieved with High color (24-bit) or Highest color (32-bit) support. Click the Settings tab to set Color quality.
